Step 5 — Action plan

Six moves, in order

You do not need to quit anything to start. Moves 1–3 cost nothing but a phone call and an hour a week.

The plan

Work top to bottom. Each move makes the next one safer.

  1. Call MyFRS: 1-866-446-9377Get your vesting, service years, average-final-compensation years, normal retirement date, and DROP window in writing. Ask specifically how moving to a county, state college, or another district affects each number.
  2. Pick two lanes to startFrom the playbook: most people in your position start with Lane 1 or 2 (the two districts) plus Lane 4 (county libraries and recreation). Add college lanes if advising appeals to you.
  3. Set the alertsSaved searches on the Manatee careers page, Sarasota HR, GovernmentJobs (Manatee County), Sarasota County Workday, and floridalibraryjobs.org, using the terms in the playbook. Weekly email frequency is enough.
  4. Translate the résuméOne page, program language: students served, performances and events run, budget managed, teachers mentored, families served. Keep the Florida certificate and years of service near the top.
  5. Use the tracker weeklyWork the tracker’s target roles: mark Interested, Applied, or Not interested, and note closing dates. Internal district postings and county library jobs can close in under two weeks.
  6. Verify before you accept — then move onceFor the winning offer: written confirmation that the position is regularly established and FRS-covered, the actual employer’s name, the start date, and — at a university — no SUSORP election. Then give notice with the bridge already built.

Questions to ask any hiring manager

These four answers separate a good exit from a lateral trap.

“Is this position FRS-covered?”

Ask it exactly that way, and ask HR — not just the hiring manager — to confirm. If the answer is “OPS,” walk away or treat it as a post-retirement job for later, not this move.

“Is it grant-funded? For how long?”

Coach, liaison, and specialist roles are sometimes grant positions. A one-year grant is a bridge, not a destination — price that risk honestly.

“What does the calendar really look like?”

10-month vs. 12-month, evenings and Saturdays (libraries, recreation), testing peaks, election seasons, registration rushes. Every job has a busy season; know yours before you sign.

“Who did this job before, and why is it open?”

Growth, retirement, and turnover tell three different stories. At 57 you are choosing your last workplace, not your next stepping stone — choose the team as carefully as the title.

Start this weekMove 1 is a phone call. Everything else in this guide gets easier — and safer — once you know your four FRS numbers.
